Studies at the Vienna University of Music with Prof. Rudolf Jettl; Studies with Ferdinand Hellmesberger, Robert Fuchs and Anton Bruckner; was a member of the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra as cellist; taught at the Vienna Conservatory (violoncello) and at the Vienna Academy of Music (piano, composition); he was rector from 1927-31 at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. From his composition classes at the Vienna Academy of Music emerged generations of well-known composers. His compositions are orientated in style on Bruckner’s work. Schmidt was considered one of the Austrian classicists of the 20th century. Works: operas (Notre Dame), four symphonies, piano concerto, chamber music, the oratorio “Buch mit sieben Siegeln.” Published by Doblinger: works for the organ, chamber music, piano works.
