Rezension

Glatt & verkehrt is a collection of four short and brilliant pieces fort he unusual combination of two violins and cello, written for Triology, a trio of the same formation, by their cellist, Tristan Schulze. All four are effective, practical and humorous, and obviously well tried in performance. Both violin parts in the outer works (a crazy version of Strauss’s Radetzky March beginning in 5/8 and a clever set of variations) are brilliant, tricky, and have to be played with style and panache. As mentioned in the preface, there is no difference in the prominence of the two violins: they are given solos of different but equal interest. The middle two works, a Tyrolean Hillbilly Harp-Yodeler Waltz played pizzicato and a piece called Dulcimer, played with anything but a bow, are clever and fun without taxing the technique. Useful encores for a good quartet with an ailing viola player. (MUSIC TEACHER, Nov. 2006)
