Rezension

Heinrich Neumann (1792-1861) published numerous works for various wind ensembles in the first half oft he 19th century, including chamber works with guitar. In this collection of two short works, the Swiss Serenade, originally written fo C clarinet but adapted in this edition for B-flat clarinet, contains allusions to folklore, drone effects and original rhythm. Schubert’s Yearning Waltz, presented in this arrangement on A clarinet, became very popular in the 19th century as a basis for various composers’ sets of theme and variations. These works are written mostly in the clarion register, occasionally spanning down to a low F-sharp, below the staff, and up to a high E, above the staff. The Swiss Serenade shifts between 6/8, 9/8 and ¾ meters and is written in C concert. The clarinet parts are well-cued, though as there are virtually no breaks in the clarinet parts, breathing and embouchure endurance will be more of an issue for the clarinet than counting rests. (…) Both works can be played by an advanced high school or early level-college student. Articulations are clearly marked. Tempo indications are marked in a 19th century fashion, with such combinations of words as Moderato Sempre con espressione that equally imply character as well as tempo. This collection contains a concert-pitched clarinet/guitar score, and separate parts for guitar, clarinet in B-flat and A, and a single concert-pitched part for flute/oboe/violin.
