Beschreibung

(Gernot Wolfgang)

Rezension

Gernot Wolfgang’s Sketch Book is another very entertaining work that shows clearly the composer’s connections to jazz and film. This three-movement work is a collection of individually compelling programmatic short pieces. “Green Island” opens the work in a very jaunty and jazz inflected vein, being dedicated to the memory of saxophone great Michael Brecker. There is also a brief – but evident – allusion to the music and feel of Ireland from the composer’s trips there. “Night Breeze” is intended to depict the atmosphere or feel of a Southern U.S. front porch. Evocative of things somewhat antebellum, it does have a bit of that feel. The work concludes with “Chromatic Train” in which the violin and clarinet trade a passage that sounds like momentum building against a percussive and propulsive piano part. This work is very catchy and entertaining and stands out for its uniqueness. (Daniel Coombs, Audiophile Audition - web magazine for music, audio & home theater, published Oct. 21, 2011) Gernot Wolfgang is basically a film and television composer and his music tends to illustrate a program. “Green Island,” the first movement of his Sketchbook , describes a lush, somewhat jazzy island that becomes increasingly mysterious as it grows in our imagination. Is this the fog-laden coast of Ireland? The “ Night Breeze ” blows over a warmer part of the earth where lovers may be sharing the swing on a rural porch. Its rhythms and unusual harmonies keep the listener wondering about the course of their affair. Are they newly in love or about to split up? The trio plays so effortlessly that the music and its direct emotional communication completely occupy the listener’s mind. The final movement, “Chromatic Train,” seems to be running on shiny new rhythmic wheels. (…) The recording is a fine one and should be treasured as a gem, replete with fine new compositions.
